Zamfara state, the Home of Farming and Shari'ah, is my dear state. The state was created in 1996 by the then Nigerian Head of State, late General Sani Abacha. It was created out of the old Sokoto state consisting of 14 LGAs with Gusau as the state capital. It borders Sokoto, Katsina, Niger, Kaduna and Niger Republic. Its population is about 3.5 million people as at 2006 population census and the people are predominantly Muslims and Hausa/Fulani by tribe.
Since its creation, the state was governed by 4 governors and the current executive governor is Hon. Bello Muhammad Matawalle. The state is generally known for its agrarian fertile soil in addition to other mineral resources. It was also known for its peaceful coexistence and was regarded as the most peaceful state in many years back. However, the story became entirely different in about a decade years ago when it turned to be the 2nd most dangerous, if not the most dangerous in the country owing to deadly banditry, kidnappings, cattle rustling etc in the state. However, with the coming on board of the current administration, normalcy has since been restored in the state.
Like all other northern states, Zamfara also suffers from many challenges common in the country religiously, politically, economically, socially and other aspects of human endeavors. However, the state is taking proactive measures towards solving such issues for the betterment of all Zamfarans today and in the future.
